Build day in Farmington

Today we worked with a local organization called Echo. They are an affordable housing organization that also runs a food bank and a preschool for low income families. Our task today was to assemble a new playground for the preschool. We got almost all the way finished before a storm forced us to end a bit early. We made huge progress considering the huge lead time of mixing and pouring concrete as well as trying to understand the instructions.

Overall a good day and a chance to partner with another affordable housing organization and learn a bit more about how they're able to help the local community. We learned that in San Juan County, where we currently are is the largest county in the US. With an area of 5500 sq miles. However, only 7% of this land is privately owned. Partially due to the large number of Indian reservation area. As a result land is shockingly expensive here. Making homes expensive as well.

Tomorrow we head to Arizona, with an optional detour to the 4 corners monument, which I will definitely be taking! :)

  1. Thanks for continuing to teach me - never would have imagined only 7% of the land being privately owned in this country in one county - but the Natives - have been shafted by our government for so many years - I guess this has to be, I supposed I'd try to live somewhere else if I wanted to own my own land.
